What it means to be grounded

The integral aspects of the various parts of the self that work together to create and maintain grounding come into a confluence in order to solidify this process that grounds the entire energy body from the basis of a healthy and balanced, or in some cases, a healing and balancing, root chakra… those of the body, heart, mind, and soul integrating with the assistance of the mind-body connection that will allow for emotions to flow coherently and steadily and for the soul intentions to be recognized and carried out in a grounded and sustainable way.

Being physically grounded means to be physically in and connected to your body- aware of and able to feel the nuance within the pains, pleasures, and experiences that physical reality will bring to you. And it’s understanding the physics of the functions within your life… how you function, your energetic capacities to carry this out…as well as the timing of it.

Maintaining your physical health integrates into and supports all of it. Physical health and wellbeing, as well as your attitudes about it and practices for it, are key components to the steps of being and becoming grounded. Getting enough nutrients from your food, enough sleep at night, and enough movement and activity to balance these out throughout the day are reciprocal to the levels of health that you experience and maintain and are corollary to the level at which you are grounded and may exist connected to your physical body.

When any of these come out of balance in some way, it can cause an imbalance in other areas of life and your health and in being fully grounded. Finding balance in any of these things may support the others…while keeping in mind, that, every body is different and has different needs. And understanding what your body and the other parts of you need on an individual basis is very helpful in accomplishing this.

“The needs you have as an individual vary according to the needs of the timing of your physical body, the mental needs you have for stability in life and in work and in your relationships as well as the needs of the heart which long for and need connections of various kinds- to learn, to support, and to allow forward movement in life and in love.  These will tend to wax and wane just as the lunar cycle expands and contracts, developing a cyclical way of being.”

Learning your individual body, it’s cycles, and it’s needs during different times will lead to furthering the trust your body has for you, as well as to amplify the health of your whole being. This can also mean that a healthy work-life balance can be a determining factor in creating a grounded life.

It’s also important to allow the body to communicate to you too: To tell you what it needs and to have you respond in a caring way, Increasing Interoception: “the nervous system’s capacity to sense and interpret the internal signals of the body.”(Source) .

This builds and supports the mind-body connection which is integral to becoming and remaining grounded. The mind body connection is amplified through the breath and creates a state of flow in which your prana/chi/life-force energy can flow steadily, encouraging inspiration, creativity and mental flow states, thus maintaining the breath is also a key component to grounding.

“The breath leads your thoughts and regulates the speed at which you think as well as the directions in which you think. It allows or disallows the openness, surety and directions that you physically move your body. And it regulates the heart…the emotional flow and speed of it’s movement.”

And then there are the dynamics of health that create a healthy environment, healthy relationships and provide the security that the body also needs to feel safe, stable, and secure and able to settle on a regular basis in order to think and feel clearly and coherently.   These correlate to what I refer to as the 4’s of the root chakras energetic support structure- those being safety, stability, sustainability, and security.  These will be  explained further in the energetics of the root chakra lesson(s) and effectively correlate with being physically, mentally and emotionally grounded.

Being mentally, cognitively, or psychologically grounded means to be aware of the reality of what is.  And in acceptance of that which is with  a healthy understanding of where your limitations of understanding may be, as well as the understanding that the universe, and those within it, are limitless in their expression and potential. Knowing that you don’t know what you don’t know, can be as valuable as being firm and stringent on what you believe.

At times tuning into the possibility of things is what some consider to be ungrounded… as it doesn’t always appear to align with what is in the present moment. But through the grounding experience we may tune ourselves to all things in the here and now to include that which is right now AND that which is possible from here at this point as well as to understand things like risk within that potential, so that through the experience we may create a pathway to that which is healthily desired for movement, growth, and evolution from a stance of reality.

It is of a self-mastered nature to be able to direct one’s thoughts into something positive and productive but this does not mean that we dwell only on “positive” thinking and effectively ignore the reality if that reality is of an undesirable nature. This is when reality may need to be faced fully in order to take effective action in order to shift it INTO something more agreeable and considerably positive. It is healthy to be a positive thinker…but the groundedness of it applies when positive thinking may arise from truth along with discernment of truth.

In being mentally grounded we also put a priority on here and now presence with what is and the ability to focus within it.  At times challenges can arise within this dynamic as conflict between the different facets of the self: what the unconscious level of mind is trained for, what the subconscious mind perceives and what the conscious is currently experiencing…along with the desires of the various parts (being semi-vulnerable to projections, ego, fleeting sensuals or chemical reactions held within the physical body) can pose a threat of distraction to an intended purpose plan or point of focus, causing argumentation or disparity within the mind. This is mitigated when healthy communications arise between all parts and consciousness evolves us to the point of understanding in order to release the duality that withholds this from occurring automatically. Bringing focus to what matters now in the present moment will help you when you feel ungrounded or uncertain about your next steps or direction. Consistently utilizing the mind as a tool and regularly checking in with your body will develop a sense of inner self-trust that establishes healthy mental patterns, connection with your body and ultimately a sense of flow that un-hinders your emotions through the balanced mind-body connection...Leading to you being able to be fully present with an experience .

This integrates holistically with emotional groundedness… which is when you are aware and in acceptance of your true feelings, that your feelings are relevant and based on objective truth while being able to express them coherently and appropriately if and when there is a healthy time and place for it while being in control of the rate of their movement  and what the intentions are that they will produce towards movement, growth, or expansion.

A key to the mind body connection and to reaching flow states of consciousness based on this connection is that of the groundedness and regulated flow of emotions. One reason that a mind body connection at times may become stagnated or stifled is often due to emotional blockages that come from either past wounding or denial around one’s own emotions. This can work correlatively however, in that producing a mind body connection based on will and effort may also allow for the release or movement of these emotions.  When working it from this angle and the mind-body connection happens, it may open the channels around the heart space in such a way that emotions just sort of happen, to express themselves or become understood or recognized... be they positive or negative it doesn’t always matter…because if you’ve been blocked, the realism it brings will feel like relief when you can be in acceptance of what they are and how to deal with them.

Maintaining this connection will be supported by allowing emotion to move as needed, neither hindering nor forcing it, and responding in appropriate ways for your soul to feel in alignment with the rightness it seeks. When emotions are moving, allow them to move without judgement. Allow acceptance of what is and was, with the resolve to fix or make better what you can and let go of what you cannot.

Release of emotion should bring you back to authenticity and clarity as well as acceptance of what authentic emotions are rather than convincing yourself of misalignment or justification of misdeeds.…as misalignment in the ethical stance within the nature of relationship…and any untruthful justification for it… can also lead to a lack of emotional grounding. These ethics pertain to those  of a consciously evolving world and include treating others with fairness, kindness, and respect.

Living with intention of soul, in mind and in heart with respect to the body’s physical needs creates grounding on another level.

It creates purpose.

The grounded work that developing an intention requires is of the soul.  It is of depth- both personally and intrinsically and will come through digging deeply into the underlayers of the depths of your ego and resolving or dissolving its differences with what is intended by your soul in order to accomplish what is needed to be accomplished…to develop what is needed to be developed, and to acquire or gain what is needed to be acquired or gained in order to accomplish it.

Holistically, and when integrated, being grounded in these aspects creates BALANCE within your human energy system and is supported by a flourishing root chakra that brings a basis for alignment to the whole system.
